Richard Sweeney is the Executive Director of the Washington State Board of Accountancy. Mr. Sweeney participates on Governor Gregoire's small cabinet and supports the Governor's management and accountability of state government initiatives.
In June 2007 the Washington Society of CPAs awarded Rick the John L O'Brien Lifetime Achievement Award for sincere and extraordinary passion, dedication, advocacy and service to the profession and its members. Congratulations, Rick!
Rick most recently has served as Special Assistant for Regulatory Affairs for the Washington State Auditor. His responsibilities included monitoring CPA contractors providing services to state and local governments and monitoring developments in accounting and auditing oversight by the Washington State Board of Accountancy, the General Accountability Office and the Public Company Oversight Accounting Board. In addition to working for the state, Rick has had a private consulting business. As a private consultant, his activities included providing litigation support to attorneys in CPA malpractice defense cases, and developing training programs for CPA firms and other organizations.
Rick is a graduate of Idaho State University with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Rick also received his MBA from Washington State University.
Rick is married to Ann Sweeney, a long time employee of the Sisters of Providence Health Care System. Ann and Rick have two adult children and five grandchildren.
Rick holds a Washington State CPA license.
